Wise and Foolish Builders

I used to love shows like Fixer Upper, Property Brothers, and Love it or List it. You know, the shows where they take the gross old houses, the ones with 19 tiny dogs, the tree that fell through the front half, and baby toys shoved in the air vents. They spend way too much money on them, but they make them beautiful again. Who else loves those shows? Can you tell me what is the worst problem you can come across a home renovation is? Foundation problems! Some people said that if a house has severe enough foundation problems you should just walk away, it isn’t worth trying to fix. That’s how bad having a poor foundation is. We can all just hear JoJo Gains calling the client asking for more money because they came across some horrible foundation problem. You cannot have a house with a faulty foundation, it has to be fixed.
Jesus had something to say about this too in Matthew 7. "Therefore whoever hears these sayings of Mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock: and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it did not fall, for it was founded on the rock. But everyone who hears these sayings of Mine, and does not do them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand: and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it fell. And great was its fall.” Matthew 7:24-27
So, these houses: They are probably completely alike. They both have windows, doors, walls, a roof. Almost all houses have those things. I hope yours does. Also, both builders heard the words of Christ. They knew what the standard for a house was. But the major difference here is where they build their houses, on the rock or the sand.
The story is saying that anyone who puts their foundations in Christ, who listens to his teachings and acts on them, has a firm foundation. This is the house that is rooted in Christ, that is able to weather the storms. This is the house that was labored over and built properly. JoJo would be happy to see that house.
Now, on the other hand. It would be so easy to throw up a little lean to on the beach, go fishing with friends, swim all day. Little Zac Brown Band, ya know. “Knee deep in the water somewhere, got the blue sky breeze blowin wind through my hair, only worry in the world is the tide gonna reach my chair.” Yeah? That could be you. Building on the sand requires little work, little commitment, and little sacrifice. Easy, huh? You could just be chilling on the beach. But, then a hurricane comes. You’re wishing you had moved your house further inland, built it on a solid foundation. This past week, there were houses being torn up in Texas from hurricane Harvey. The houses were literally being picked up and moved due to the water and winds rushing by them. And in your life, when, not if, but when the storm comes, if your foundation is faulty, you will not stand.
So what is a solid foundation? What does it look like? It is a foundation founded in christ, not in gossip, lies, appearance, friends, instagram, or anything else of this world. If it’s not those things,  then what does it mean to have a foundation in Christ? It means reading his word and acting on it. That is where most of us fall short. We can all read, we all learned how to read in Kindergarten, but how many of us act. You can read a Building a House for Dummies, but does that mean your house is suddenly on a firm foundation. No! In the same way, you cannot expect to be rooted in Christ just because you read his word. Just like it is easy to build a house with poor craftsmanship, it is easy to have faith with little energy, little commitment, and little sacrifice. “Just roll with the crowd.” “Superficial faith is good enough.” These are the lies the world tells you and they are not a good foundation.  But, Jesus tells you that the only way to survive the storms is to cling to him. Unfortunately, many people realize this too late. They realize the storms are coming and ask for help in the last second. It’s like the movie Evan Almighty, it’s basically the story of Noah’s Ark, just funnier. He’s just building his ship, the way God told him to and all the reporters are there mocking him. But, then they see the dam breaking and they run for the ship, regretting their past decisions. He was building his ship before the storm came, when it was still sunny. It was hard, there was labor, he lost his friends, his job, and for a while his family, but he is the reason all those people lived.
This is where we have a choice. The builders both heard the words of Jesus, they knew the standards, but one chose to act on them and the other didn’t. This choice is where we can go down the wide path or the narrow path. The wide path is the easy, obvious choice. It’s just right there and everyone is doing it. It seems pretty nice. But one day, the storms will come and you will find yourself alone in a desolate land. The narrow path is the hard path. It is not as easy to find, there are not as many people on it. But, when the storms come, you will be able to stand strong.
In my own life, I find that when I am basing my actions in Christ, reading his word, listening to Christian music, going to Church, praying, doing devotions, when I’m involved in my small group, it is so much easier to handle hard things. But oftentimes, I go through periods when I am not walking with Christ, and during those times I have a lot of anxiety attacks and they come because I think I have to do everything by myself. I am standing on a shaky foundation and when more weight is put on it, it collapses. But, when I am relying on Christ, it is so much easier to give things over. If I were just to stay on the path with Jesus, keep my foundation maintained and not crumbling, when the hard times hit, it would not as destructive.

I just came back from a mountaintop experience, a high with Christ on a church retreat. These are awesome, but often while you were there, you realize that you have a faulty foundation. You cannot keep living on it! Just like in a renovation when you have to fix the foundation once you realize it is faulty, you have to fix your spiritual foundation. So, give Jesus a call, pretend you’re Hilary from Love it or List it, and work on rebuilding that foundation. Build it before the storms come, not when the storms are on the horizon. And most importantly, build your foundation on Christ!

A Torch Against the Night Review

A Torch Against the Night Review

Book: A Torch Against the Night (An Ember in the Ashes #2)

Author: Sabaa Tahir

Genre: High Fantasy

My Rating: 5 stars!
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Summary (from Goodreads):
Elias and Laia are running for their lives. After the events of the Fourth Trial, Martial soldiers hunt the two fugitives as they flee the city of Serra and undertake a perilous journey through the heart of the Empire.
Laia is determined to break into Kauf—the Empire’s most secure and dangerous prison—to save her brother, who is the key to the Scholars’ survival. And Elias is determined to help Laia succeed, even if it means giving up his last chance at freedom.
But dark forces, human and otherworldly, work against Laia and Elias. The pair must fight every step of the way to outsmart their enemies: the bloodthirsty Emperor Marcus, the merciless Commandant, the sadistic Warden of Kauf, and, most heartbreaking of all, Helene—Elias’s former friend and the Empire’s newest Blood Shrike.
Bound to Marcus’s will, Helene faces a torturous mission of her own—one that might destroy her: find the traitor Elias Veturius and the Scholar slave who helped him escape…and kill them both.

Overall Thoughts:
I loved being back in this world! I love all the characters, the plot, and the writing! This book was everything I was looking for in a sequel and it delivered in every way!
Characters:
Both Laia and Elias have to grow a lot throughout the book. They are thrown into situations that are far different than anything either had ever experienced before. Laia discovers that she is stronger than she originally thought and far more capable than anyone ever expected from her. Elias has to reevaluate who he is now that Blackcliff is no longer deciding it for him. Together, they change and evolve to be the person they need to be.
One thing I did not like was the romance in this book. I’m going to keep this spoiler free, but the romance that Laia pursued in the middle of the story seemed forced and unnatural. Now that I have finished the book, I understand why it needed to happen, but I don’t really like it when a romance is used as a plot device. Thankfully, the romance aspect of this book was minor, so it didn’t take away from the overall story.
I loved the added element of Helene’s perspective because I love her character! She is so complex and being inside her head was fascinating! I also liked her perspective because we got to see an inside look into the government and the politics of this world. The position of Blood Shrike is so interesting, so I’m glad we got to have her perspective!
Plot:
The plot of this book was nonstop! There was always a plan being hatched and a journey to begin. Plus, add in three characters with ulterior motives and complex world, it was always changing!
Writing:
I love Sabaa Tahir’s writing! It is flowery, but not too ornate, simple, yet complex. She makes me feel exactly what her characters are feeling and it caused me to have a deep connection with her story. I read this book quickly because her writing makes it easy lose yourself in the story!
Who would I recommend this to?
Anyone looking for an awesome ya high fantasy series to get lost in and become obsessed with. These books  remind me of Throne of Glass with some Renee Ahdieh and Leigh Bardugo mixed in.
Have you read this book? Comment your thoughts below! I would love to hear from you!

#TheReadingQuest Week 1 Update

#TheReadingQuest Week 1 Update
Hey y’all! That’s it! Week one of #TheReadingQuest is over!  It has been a crazy busy week for me, but I read two books! Unfortunately, they can’t count towards my overall quest because I had started them before the quest started :(. But, on a happier note, I can now jump into my reading quest TBR! So, if you want to see my wrap up and the books I have planned for this week, just keep on reading!
The first book I finished this week was Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston. I had to finish this for summer reading for my literature class. I gave it 1/5 stars because it was terrible! There was no point to this book, no character development, it was hard to read, honestly the list just goes on and on. I am considering doing a full review of this one, so comment down below if you would like to see that.
The second book I read was A Torch Against the Night by Sabaa Tahir. Can I just say that I love this series! It is so good! I am definitely doing a review for this one, so stayed tuned for that! I already have a review for the first book in the series, An Ember in the Ashes! For sure a 5 star read!
The books I am planning on reading this week are Alex, Approximately by Jenn Bennett and the Six of Crows duology by Leigh Bardugo. If I make it through those (which I doubt I will) I will start in on Libba Bray’s Diviners duology.
I know I said in my original post I would keep you updated on my Twitter, but since I wasn’t reading any books for the quest yet, I haven’t been very active on there. This week I will for sure be posting updates when I start and finish and book. If you want to follow along with me, follow me there!
One more quick announcement! I opened an Etsy shop yesterday and I am selling prints from my Instagram account! It would mean the world if you would go and check out my shop!

Also, big thanks to CW of Read, Think, Ponder for the awesome artwork for this read-a-thon!

20 Reasons Why Jesus is the Best Dude Ever

20 Reasons Why Jesus is the Best Dude Ever
I’m going to be honest with y’all, I’ve had a pretty terrible week. Good things have happened and bad things have happened, but through it all Jesus was there! These are just some of the reasons that I love Jesus and think he is the best dude ever! Some are funny, some are serious, but all are true. Jesus is the most awesomest guy ever and I love him more than my words could ever begin to describe. This for sure does not adequately describe his power, greatness, strength, and love, but nothing will ever compare to him.
  1. I have an incredibly anxious heart and only one things helps it. That would be Jesus.
  2. I’ve had a pretty terrible week, but I know Jesus is in control.
  3. This world is a dark place, but Jesus is the light.
  4. Jesus is legit my best friend. I tell him everything. My highs and lows, my roses and thorns, my knives and spoons, my wet and dry socks, he gets it all.
  5. Not only is Jesus my best friend, I’ve met all of my best friends because of him. If I didn’t go to church, I wouldn’t have the awesome community around me that I do. That community also introduced me to chacos, so I am forever in their debt ( and in debt because those things aren’t cheap!)
  6. He doesn’t care if I spill yellow paint all over the floor because I was bible journaling. It is my way to worship and he is just happy to be with me.
  7. Let’s repeat that: He is just happy to be with me! Jesus loves hearing from me and he loves it when I simply sit in his presence and be still. I don’t have to do anything, he only wants to come and hang out with me.
  8. I am alive because he died for me. If it weren’t for him, I would be a dead (wo)man walking and would have no hope or life in me.
  9. He loves me. Whenever I feel unloved or unappreciated, he is there.
  10. He thinks I am perfect and beautiful. How’s that for self esteem? The guy who created the stars and mountains and labrador retrievers thinks YOU are beautiful!
  11. He brings me immense joy. I have never thought about Jesus and felt fear, remorse, anger, guilt, or shame. All I can think of is love, peace, and joy.
  12. I come as I am. I can bring my freight train full of baggage and he will help me sort through all of it and let go of all of the things that keep me from being who he made me to be.
  13. He welcomes all. There is always enough love, enough strength, enough space to let everyone in. It’s not an exclusive club, it’s the entirety of everyone for all eternity.
  14. He is forever. There is no beginning and there is no end. And in all of that massiveness, he has not lost us. He knows all, controls all time and space, and yet he has time for me.
  15. He is the inspiration for the best music to ever exist: christian rap. It’s great and you know it.
  16. He is stronger than anything I will ever face. He can bring down giants, empires, and mountains with a single word. And that strength becomes ours in him.
  17. He is merciful. When I fall, when I stray, he picks me back up. He will always clean my wounds and put me back on the path of righteousness.
  18. He wants to be with me. Daddy God doesn’t force Jesus to spend time with me. He chooses to because he loves me. That’s radical if you ask me.
  19. He allows me to grow and change. He doesn’t hold my past against me. He doesn’t judge based on who I was. He knows me and loves me for who I am.
  20. In conclusion, Jesus is the bee's knees, the cat’s pajamas, the gnarliest, most radical, wicked, epic, lit, sick, super, killer, groovy, tubular, awesome sauciest person to ever exist. Don’t even try to tell me I’m wrong.

What is the most awesomest thing about Jesus to you? Comment down below and we can have a Jesus appreciation party together!

Top Picks Tuesday | August 15, 2017

Hello and welcome to Top Picks Tuesday! This is where I wrap up my week and have an appreciation party for all the things that helped me to survive! This past week, I went back to school and it was honestly one of the most chaotic weeks of my life. There was something going on everyday and I just felt exhausted by the time I finally sat down for a break. So, these are all of the things that make this week slightly easier, slightly better, slightly more, well,  joyful!
First off, I have two songs to share with you this week that I have been loving! The first is “Gracefully Broken” by Matt Redman and the second is “Street Called Mercy” by Hillsong United. These songs were so encouraging to me this past week! (Bonus song! I have started listening to Mandisa’s “Shackles” every morning right when I wake up and it is by far the best way to start your day!)
Another great way to begin your day is with a new devotional! Last week I was working on the Rend Collective devotional by YouVersion and I loved it! It tied together their songs with a relevant devotion and scripture. Then, in the past couple days, I have been doing I Want to Grow in Grace: Devotions From a Time of Grace and so far it has been convicting and powerful and important. If you are looking for a meaningful bible study that will change your outlook on life, then I would highly suggest this one!
Now, for my food favorites! I have been searching for the perfect protein bar lately, and I found a fabu little bar called The GFB! They come in two flavors, chocolate peanut butter and cranberry toasted almond. They are gluten free, vegan, non-GMO, and more good things, plus they are tasty! I would highly recommend these!
Before school started, I got two new pairs of Levis and boy-oh-boy do I love these babies! They are so comfy and look so good on me! Everyone needs a few good pairs of jeans, and these are mine! I could literally live in them!

What are your favorite things from this past week? Please comment down below because I would love to hear from you!

Home: A Poem

Home
It is where I come from,

My dad and my mum,
My family and friends,
My beginnings and ends.

It is where I place my hopes and dreams,
Where I had my first garden,
My first pair of pearl earrings.
It is where I feel safe and know I am loved,
Where I found freedom and peace from above.

It is where I find rest in the rocky sea,
Where I try and succeed at being the best of me.
It is good vibes and sunny days,
Long nights when the world rolled away.

It is adventures in books,
It is learning to cook,
It is my best and my worst,
My joy and my hurt,
It is, and forever will be, home.

Fall 2017 Anticipated Reads

A new season means new books! There are so many good books coming out in August and September! Some of my most anticipated releases for the entire year are coming out and I could not be more excited!
This is Not the End by Chandler Baker came out yesterday, August 8. This book is really complicated to explain, but it sounds like it is going to be pretty awesome! Basically, a girl’s parents die in a car accident and she has to figure out how to save them with resurrection technology. Each person gets one resurrection to use, but she has already promised her resurrection to someone else, so how can she save her parents? Then, she meets a guy (of course) and she has to decide what is most important in her life.
Tower of Dawn by Sarah J. Maas is going to be hitting stores on September 5. This is my most anticipated read for the entire year! I love Chaol so much and I am siked to see what he has been up to! For those who aren’t at the mercy of SJM, this is the 6th book in the Throne of Glass series, but it occurs at the same time as the 5th book. I don’t want to give anything away, but just know I am so excited!
They Both Die at the End by Adam Silvera is also coming out on September 5. It is about two boys who are notified that they are going to die in one day. They meet through an app for people who are going to die and they meet up for one great last adventure!
Warcross by Marie Lu is being released on September 12. This is a book about a videogame and a girl hacks into the system, becoming an overnight sensation. I have loved all of Marie Lu’s past books, so I have high expectations for this one!
One Dark Throne by Kendare Blake comes out on September 19. This one is the sequel to Three Dark Crowns, which was one of my favorite books of last year! It is about 3 sisters who all have different powers and must battle for the throne. It is a multi-perspective high fantasy and I loved every second of the first one!

What books are you looking forward to in the next few months? Please comment down below! I would love to hear from you!

Top Picks Tuesday | August 8, 2017

It’s the best time of the week! It’s Top Picks Tuesday! This is where I pick out some the things I have been loving for the past week and talk a little about them! So, let’s get into my top picks!
Last weekend, I got a new Vera Bradley Agenda. I had one a few years ago, but then I came to the Lilly side. But, once more I have a Vera Bradley one and since I started school yesterday, I am already loving it!
So, I have a slightly unhealthy obsession with french pop music and my favorite band recently has been Arcadian! My favorite song right now is C’est que tu m’as appris! Even if you don’t understand it, you should go listen to it.
So maybe French pop isn’t your thing, well I discovered the Wild Country playlist on Spotify this past week and this is by far the best pre-made country playlist on Spotify! It has all of my favorite songs and has all around good vibes. Again, go listen to it right now.
Confession time! I love crime TV shows! Some favorites are NCIS, Hawaii 5 0, Bones, Psych, Burn Notice, and Castle! Anyways, I have been delaying starting NCIS season 14, but it has been so good! I thought that based off of the end of season 13, this one would be lacking, but they jumped in and are doing an awesome jobs so far!
What have you been loving this week? Go ahead and comment down below! I would love to hear from you!

Invitations from Jesus

God has a plan. He sends us invitations to go places and do things. We can try and say no, but like Jonah, it will not always work out. So we accept those invitations. Sometimes they are happy invitations, like a Birthday Party, sometimes they are sad, like a funeral. But nonetheless, we listen and go where he tells us to go. This summer I have received 4 invitations from Jesus that have taken me to some pretty incredible places.
The first invitation came in early May when the Children’s Ministry director at my church asked if I wanted to be their intern for the summer. I immediately jumped at the opportunity, as I had been looking for ways to be more involved in my church. This invitation led me to being a small group leader on Sunday’s in June, being a VBS crew leader to 1st graders, co-leading a 6th grade girls bible study, helping with TACO (Taking Awesome Care of Others) Tuesday, and going into the office 2 days a week. Through all of this, God taught me to trust his timing and his plan. I didn’t want 1st graders, I wanted 3rd, but God moved things around to teach me patience. I had to rethink what it really meant to be patient when working with those little kids. He also taught me how to work on a team. As much as I love being a lone wolf, there are so many things you cannot possibly do alone. He taught me how to work with people I didn’t necessarily like. So, in those 150 hours I was their intern, I did a lot and I learned a lot.
The next invitation has been 13 years in the making and came in the form of my Chrysalis retreat.  My mom has been wanting me to go on this since she went on her Emmaus, when I was 2. But, honestly, the thought terrified me. Going to one of their gatherings was like coming in on a friend group that already had years of inside jokes. I had no idea what I was getting into. But, I felt a tug on my heart, so despite my fears, I went anyways. And it is one of the best things I have ever done. While there, God showed me his love in ways I had never seen before. There were people praying for me by name who had never met me. There were friends back home who didn’t know Jesus who were writing me letters. I have never seen a community so full of love before in my life. To give it a frame of reference, if God’s love is a hurricane, I experienced a drop of it there. But that drop was not tiny, it was overwhelming, and relentless, and more than I could have ever asked for.
The third invitation is a bit more unique and came in the form of a wedding invitation. My mom and I were invited to my cousin’s wedding out in Seattle. (I have a whole travel diary posted here) While I was there, exploring the Columbia River Basin, Olympic National Park, and Mount St. Helens, I realized how huge God is. He is the creator and he created all of that. He created the ginormous mountains, the pure blue waters, the endless expanse of sky, and trees, on top of trees, on top of trees. A God who can do that is powerful and awesome, and he is our God. One day, my mom and I decided to go and ride horses on the beach. During that 2 mile ride, we lost our keys (You can read the more in depth story time on the travel diary). While sitting in Ocean Shores, 2 and a half hours from Seattle, for 6 hours, I thought I would be having anxiety attacks. But, instead, my mom and I prayed and took action and waited patiently on the Lord. And God did it! He not only gave us peace, but he also gave us a way to our hotel that night. Praise the Lord!
My fourth and final invitation came in my working as a camp counselor for one week at a camp for kids in transitional homes. These kids come from rough backgrounds, often take care of their younger siblings when their parents are gone, and on that note, may not see their parents that often. So, our job as counselors was to be crazy and weird, but also take care of anything they needed. None of the girls had swimsuits, so we took care of that. We made their plates at meals. We made their beds. I even taught my camper how to swim.  They didn’t have to do anything. But, the most important part of the job was the weird part. My favorite song for years was “Undignified” by David Crowder Band, but I had never before understood what it truly meant to be undignified. Saying things like, “I like kind words in my happy bubble.” or “I’ll be your turtle.” Dancing like a complete mad woman to Pharaoh, Pharaoh and the Banana song. Things like sprinkling glitter on their heads before they go to sleep or having staring contests to see who throws the trash away. Those kids got everything we had. All of our energy, all of our love, all of our joy. In my fellow counselors, I saw them pour themselves out time and time again, only to come to the Lord and ask him to fill him again. I saw in them an undeniable love and joy that can only be found in the Lord.

God invites us to some pretty crazy things. Whether it be going to Nineveh, going to camp, going on vacation, or going on the cross, he can do amazing things! Where has God been inviting you? You don’t have to comment this one, but think about it. When you accept an invitation from God, you receive something you never could have foreseen coming.
